Note: Always replace your struts in pairs, where applicable. Most lids, covers, or hatches have a strut on each side. Failure to replace both struts can result in a warped or damaged hinge.
Gas Strut with Exceptional Stability
Most gas struts consist of a tube filled with pressurized nitrogen gas, a piston, and rod. The Atlas Lift strut, however, has a dynamic damping groove inside the tube that regulates gas movement across the piston. This ensures your tool box lid, bed cover, or boat hatch stays open when you want it open and shuts slowly without bouncing or slamming. Lastly, in contrast to struts that only have gas in the chamber, a few drops of oil have been mixed in to help seal the piston and lubricate the rod. This allows your lid to move more smoothly as the rod travels in and out of the tube.
How to Find the Right Gas Strut for Your Application
Determining which gas strut is right for your application is easy. All you need to do is remove your worn-out strut and locate the force printed on the side of the tube:
Then, pull the rod out so it's fully extended and take the following measurements:

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Universal Gas Strut Lift Support Arm. This is gonna replace one lift support arm for your truck cover, boat hatch, toolbox, or other application. It will extend out to help keep your lid or hatch open, and it'll give you a little bit of assist as you're extending it out, and then it's going to gently compress while you're closing to help prevent it from slamming shut, potentially causing damage to fingers or equipment that you have in the way, so it is going to be a very important component. So if you are looking to replace one, this is gonna do a good job. It does have the 10 millimeter nylon ball socket connectors, so it will snap right in place onto your 10 millimeter ball studs, give you a nice solid connection.
From the center of one ball socket to the center of the other, our overall length is going to be just over 17 inches, we'll call it 17 3/16 of an inch, our compressed length is going to be right about 10 7/8, just under 11 inches when compressed, so our stroke here is about 6 3/8 of an inch. This does compress with a 64 to 74 pound force, which is equivalent to about 285 to 329 Newtons. It does feature a dampening technology that's going to help provide a nice smooth operation, so you're not gonna have to worry about bouncing or jumping that you sometimes get with other models or styles of lift support arm. This is gonna make sure that even in all weather conditions, whether it's snowing or raining, it's gonna have a nice frictionless movement for you for a nice smooth operation. The steel shaft here is coated with nitride coating, so it's gonna be corrosion resistant for nice long lasting performance.
I won't get in to all the internal components here, but they are gonna do a really good job for you making sure that you're gonna have that nice smooth operation, it's gonna help to make for a nice long-lasting lift support arm here. It does come with a limited lifetime warranty, so if you we're to have any problems with it, you're more than welcome to reach out to us here at etrailer.com. But as long as you're needing that 17 3/16 of an inch extended length, 10 7/8 of an inch compressed length, with that 64 to 74 pounds of force, I think this is gonna be exactly what you need. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com, thanks for watching..

The struts we have had in the past seem to fail in the winter time.
These worked fine during warm weather, however, when it got cold they quit working and would not hold nor lift the glass lid. These have been replaced with factory units.
just took longer then expected .
